Key Items
The Explorer Gadget is a Key Item in Pokémon GO that automatically throws
Poké Balls at nearby Pokémon and spins PokéStops while you walk around. It works much like a Pokémon GO Plus+ accessory, but it's built into the game, so you don't need a separate device.
The Explorer Gadget launched in 2026 as a phased rollout. It's available to trainers at level 20 and higher, so not every account may have it yet.
How to Use the Explorer Gadget
- Tap the Explorer Gadget icon in the top right of the Map View, or open Key Items in your item bag and select the Explorer Gadget.
- Tap Use to turn it on.
- Lock your phone and keep exploring at a casual pace. You can pause and resume it at any time.
When you open Pokémon GO again, a summary shows the Pokémon you caught (newest first) and how many PokéStops were spun.
Explorer Gadget Limits
- It only throws regular Poké Balls, never
Great Balls or
Ultra Balls. If you have no Poké Balls when you turn it on, the game gives you a few to get started. - There's a daily limit on catches and PokéStop spins, based on your Trainer level. It stops once you reach the limit.
- It won't catch Pokémon you haven't registered in your Pokédex yet, but it will catch new forms of a species you've already registered.
- It won't try to catch Mighty Pokémon.
- It stops if your Pokémon Storage or item bag is full.
- It can't run at the same time as a Pokémon GO Plus+ or other accessory. Switching to an accessory while the gadget is on turns it off until the next day.
