Frequently Asked Questions
How do power-up costs work in Pokémon GO?
Each paid power-up raises a Pokémon by half a level. The calculator adds the Stardust, Candy, and Candy XL cost of every half-level between the current and target levels. Regular Candy is used below Level 40, while Candy XL is used for paid power-ups that begin at Level 40.
Once you know the level you want to reach, use the Pokémon GO CP Calculator to compare Combat Power at different levels and IVs. You can also browse the Pokémon GO Candy directory to find each Pokémon’s Candy and Candy XL.
When do power-ups start using Candy XL?
Candy XL replaces regular Candy for paid power-ups that begin at Level 40. For example, powering up from Level 39.5 to 40 uses regular Candy, while the next power-up from Level 40 to 40.5 uses Candy XL.
How do Lucky, Shadow, and Purified Pokémon change the cost?
Lucky Pokémon use 50% less Stardust without changing the Candy cost. Shadow Pokémon use 20% more Stardust and Candy. Purified Pokémon use 10% less Stardust and Candy, and a Purified Pokémon can also be Lucky. Each modifier is rounded up for the individual half-level power-up before the total is calculated.
Can a Shadow Pokémon be Lucky?
No. Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded, so they cannot become Lucky. Selecting Shadow in the calculator automatically turns off the Lucky option. A Purified Pokémon can be traded and can be Lucky.
Why does Eternatus have a separate option?
Eternatus uses its own much higher Candy and Candy XL schedule in Pokémon GO, while its Stardust schedule is unchanged. The Eternatus option applies those unique costs and disables Lucky, Shadow, and Purified statuses that are not currently available for it.
How does purification affect the power-up calculator?
Purifying a Shadow Pokémon raises it to at least Level 25 and reduces future Stardust and Candy power-up costs by 10%. When you select Purified, the calculator raises the current level to 25 if needed and applies the reduced costs. It does not include the separate Stardust and Candy required to purify the Pokémon. If the Pokémon is also Lucky, turn on Lucky to apply the Lucky Stardust discount too.
Does a Best Buddy boost change the power-up cost?
No. Best Buddy temporarily adds one level while that Pokémon is your active buddy, but it is not a paid power-up. The calculator covers permanent paid levels from Level 1 through Level 50 and does not charge resources for the temporary Best Buddy boost.
