Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a 0/15/15 IV spread often outrank a 15/15/15 in Great or Ultra League?

Attack is a linear component in the CP formula, whereas Defense and HP are calculated under square roots. This means each Attack IV increases CP more significantly than Defense or HP IVs. When a Pokémon has a low Attack IV, it can reach a higher level before hitting the CP cap, and at that higher level, every stat is multiplied by a larger CPM. The extra bulk gained nearly always outweighs the loss in Attack. Once the CP cap is removed, this trade-off disappears, which is why Master League favors 15/15/15 IVs.

What is stat product, and why does this ranker use it?

Stat product is calculated as Attack × Defense × HP after the level cap is applied. It represents the overall performance a Pokémon can achieve under a CP cap. Essentially, it’s damage output multiplied by its longevity or bulk. Two IV spreads may have identical CP but very different stat products; the higher stat product usually wins more shield-pressure trades and endgames without shields. Ranking by stat product provides the most straightforward way to compare PvP IVs across all 4,096 combinations.

Which IV floor should I pick for a Pokémon I caught from a trade?

Set the IV floor based on your friendship level at the time of the trade: Good Friend is 1, Great Friend is 2, Ultra Friend is 3, and Best Friend is 5. A Lucky Trade always sets the floor to 12. The IV floor narrows down possible IV spreads but does not affect rankings. Choosing the correct floor keeps the table accurate and prevents showing combinations your Pokémon could never have obtained.

Why does Master League show 15/15/15 as rank 1 for everything?

Master League has no CP cap, so the level-versus-IV trade-off no longer applies. Every Pokémon can be powered up to its true ceiling: Level 50, or Level 51 with Best Buddy. The ranker still evaluates all 4,096 combinations for completeness, but you will consistently see perfect IVs (hundos) ranked at the top and zero IVs (nundos) at the bottom.

Why does my rank-one Pokémon lose the mirror?

Stat product maximizes overall bulk and damage, but it overlooks two factors that often decide close mirror matches. First, Charge Move Priority (CMP) means the Pokémon with a higher Attack stat acts first when both trainers use a charge move simultaneously. A 0-Attack IV almost always loses this tie. Second, breakpoints can occur. A single extra point of Attack can boost a fast move’s damage by one per hit. For this reason, some trainers prefer a higher Attack rank to secure CMP or reach a key breakpoint in important matchups.

Should I purify a Shadow Pokémon I plan to use in PvP?

There is no single “when to purify” rule that fits every situation. Deciding when to purify depends on the Pokémon and your team. A Shadow Pokémon gets a 20% attack boost, but at the cost of a 20% defense decrease. This attack boost can be important for closers in capped leagues, but the reduction in defense is bad for tanks. If your Shadow Pokémon is already 13/13/13 or higher, purifying turns it into a hundo. This is often called a “purifiable hundo,” which is useful for Master League or any species that maxes below the cap.

How is the tie-break order applied when two combos have the same stat product?

Exact ties in stat products are common because Attack and Defense are stored internally as floating-point values. The ranker breaks ties in this order: higher Attack stat, then higher HP stat, then higher CP, then higher Stamina IV. Attack comes first because it wins CMP races; HP comes next because the floor on HP can hide small stat-product differences. The ordering matches the priority most PvP trainers care about in practice.

Do I need to power my Pokémon to the exact level the ranker shows?

Yes, if you want the rank shown. The level column is the highest half-step that keeps the Pokémon under the league cap for that IV spread. If you power past it and go over the cap, your Pokémon will no longer be eligible for that league. Stop short, and you leave stat product on the table. Levels above 40 require XL Candy, and Level 51 needs Best Buddy status.
