How buddy distance works

Once you make a Pokémon your Buddy, the distance you walk counts toward its next candy. Each time you cover its buddy distance, your Buddy finds one candy and the count starts over. It is recommended to turn Adventure Sync turned on so that distance you walk while the game is closed counts too.

About half of all Pokémon walk 3 km. The 1 km group is mostly early-route (main series) Pokémon such as Pidgey, Caterpie and Magikarp. The 5 km group includes Eevee and every pseudo-legendary line, and every Legendary, Mythical and Ultra Beast Pokémon requires 20 km of walking.

Halve the distance with an Excited Buddy

When your Buddy's mood reaches Excited, it finds candy at half its usual distance, so a 20 km Legendary earns one every 10 km. Using a Poffin is the easiest way to get your buddy excited, although this a premium item.

Candy XL and Mega Energy from walking

Once you reach Trainer Level 31, your Buddy can find Candy XL as well as candy while you walk. If you have Mega Evolved a Pokémon from your Buddy's evolution line before, walking also earns Mega Energy: 5 for every kilometer, which comes to 5, 15, 25 or 100 Mega Energy with each candy depending on the Pokémon’s walking distance.

Evolutions that require walking

A few evolutions also require you to walk a set distance with the Pokémon as your Buddy, on top of the candy cost. Eevee needs 10 km to evolve into Espeon by day or Umbreon by night, Woobat needs 1 km, Bonsly, Mime Jr. and Happiny need 15 km, Feebas and Bramblin need 20 km, and Pawmo needs 25 km.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is buddy distance in Pokémon GO?

It is how far you walk with a Pokémon set as your Buddy to earn one of its candy. Every species has a fixed distance of 1, 3, 5 or 20 km.

Which Pokémon have a 20 km buddy distance?

Legendary, Mythical and Ultra Beast Pokémon have the highest (20 km) required walking distance to earn a candy.

Does an Excited Buddy earn candy faster?

Yes. An Excited Buddy finds candy at half its usual distance, so a 3 km Pokémon earns one every 1.5 km and a 20 km Pokémon every 10 km.

Do Shadow, Mega and regional forms have a different buddy distance?

No. Every form has the same buddy walking distance requirement as its normal form. Shadow Mewtwo requires 20 km, the same as non-shadow Mewtwo. Alolan Vulpix requires 3 km, just like Kantonian Vulpix.

Can evolving change a Pokémon's buddy distance?

Rarely. An evolution line almost always shares one distance. The exceptions are newer evolutions of older Pokémon: Obstagoon needs 3 km while Galarian Zigzagoon and Linoone require 1 km. Overqwil, Sneasler and Wyrdeer need 5 km while Hisuian Qwilfish, Hisuian Sneasel and Stantler only need you to walk 3 km.

Does Adventure Sync count toward buddy candy?

Yes. With Adventure Sync on, distance you walk while the game is closed still counts toward your Buddy's next candy.

How far is each buddy distance in miles?

1 km is 0.6 miles, 3 km is 1.9 miles, 5 km is 3.1 miles and 20 km is 12.4 miles. An Excited Buddy needs half that.

How much Mega Energy does walking a Buddy earn?

Walking a buddy earns 5 Mega Energy for every kilometer walked, but you need to have Mega Evolved a Pokémon from your Buddy's evolution line at least once. That means you earn 15 Mega Energy with each candy from a 3 km Buddy and 100 from a 20 km Buddy.
