Bulbasaur in Pokémon GO

Bulbasaur is the Grass- and Poison-type Kanto starter, and one of the most recognizable Pokémon in Pokémon GO. On its own it is a collection and Candy target, but it is the first step of a line that ends in Venusaur, a dependable Grass attacker and a long-running PvP pick.

Where Bulbasaur fits

Do not expect Bulbasaur to carry a raid. Its job is to feed Candy into Ivysaur and Venusaur, and to give Shiny hunters a classic chase. Once you have a high-IV Bulbasaur, the priority is powering up the final stage rather than the base form.

Best moveset

For Grass damage, the strongest combination is Vine Whip as the fast move and Power Whip as the charged move. Sludge Bomb is the better choice when you want Poison coverage in PvP. Save Frenzy Plant for the final evolution, where it does the real work.

Evolving to Venusaur

It costs 25 Candy to evolve Bulbasaur into Ivysaur and another 100 to reach Venusaur. If you have a Community Day Bulbasaur, evolve all the way to Venusaur while the event bonus is active to get Frenzy Plant, the exclusive Grass charged move that pushes it into top-tier Grass attacker range.

Catching and Shiny

Bulbasaur shows up in the wild, hatches from eggs, and rotates through field research. Shiny Bulbasaur, with its teal bulb, first appeared during its Community Day and is now a possible encounter whenever Bulbasaur is boosted.

  • Type: Grass and Poison
  • Evolves into Ivysaur, then Venusaur
  • Best Grass moveset: Vine Whip and Power Whip
  • Community Day move: Frenzy Plant
