Key Items
The Camera is a Key Item in Pokémon GO used to take photos of Pokémon with GO Snapshot, the game's AR photo mode. Every trainer has one, and it can't be removed from your item bag.
GO Snapshot lets you place up to three Pokémon in a photo of your real surroundings. Pick them yourself or use a suggested group set.
How to Use the Camera
You can start GO Snapshot in three ways:
- Tap the AR toggle in the top right of a wild Pokémon encounter.
- Open a Pokémon from your storage and tap the camera icon.
- Open your Buddy's page and tap the camera icon.
Once you're in, pan your phone slowly until you see yellow footsteps on the ground. Tap them to place your Pokémon, then tap the shutter button to take the photo.
Camera settings include Reality Blending (Pokémon can be hidden behind real objects), Burst Mode (three photos per tap), and a 5- or 10-second self timer. Photos save to your phone, and you can add stickers before sharing them.
Photobombs
Sometimes a wild Pokémon jumps into your photo uninvited. The game saves two versions of that photo, one with the visitor and one without. After you close GO Snapshot, the photobombing Pokémon appears on your map so you can catch it.
Smeargle is the best-known photobomber, and some events add other Pokémon as photobombers for a limited time.
Other Uses for the Camera
- Some Field Research tasks ask you to take a snapshot of a wild Pokémon or your Buddy.
- Taking a snapshot of your Buddy earns one Buddy heart per day.
The Main Menu also has a separate photo feature called "What's Your Favorite?", which lets you take a picture with any Pokémon, even one you haven't caught.
