FireRed and LeafGreen tags mark Pokémon you can only catch in one version. Trade means you have to trade for it, and Event only means it came from an official event.

About HMs in FireRed and LeafGreen
HMs (Hidden Machines) teach moves that also work outside battle, like Cut for clearing small trees and Surf for crossing water.
FireRed and LeafGreen have seven HMs, and you can’t finish the game without Cut, Surf and Strength. This page shows where to get each one, which badge lets you use it outside battle, and every Pokémon that can learn it. Pick the HMs you need and it finds the fewest Pokémon that can carry them, so the rest of your team keeps four battle moves.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many HMs are in FireRed and LeafGreen?
Seven: HM01 Cut, HM02 Fly, HM03 Surf, HM04 Strength, HM05 Flash, HM06 Rock Smash and HM07 Waterfall. HM08 Dive is in the game’s data, but you can’t get it.
Where do you get each HM in FireRed and LeafGreen?
In the order you get them:
- HM01 Cut: From the ship’s captain aboard the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City, after easing his seasickness
- HM05 Flash: From Professor Oak’s Aide in the Route 2 house, once you have caught 10 species
- HM02 Fly: From the woman in the house in northern Route 16
- HM03 Surf: From the man in the Secret House at the back of the Safari Zone
- HM04 Strength: Return the Gold Teeth, found in the Safari Zone, to the Safari Warden in Fuchsia City
- HM06 Rock Smash: From the old man at Ember Spa, between the two waterfalls on One Island
- HM07 Waterfall: In the southeast of Icefall Cave on Four Island
Which badge do you need to use each HM in FireRed and LeafGreen?
To use an HM outside battle: Cascade Badge for Cut, Boulder Badge for Flash, Thunder Badge for Fly, Soul Badge for Surf, Rainbow Badge for Strength, Marsh Badge for Rock Smash and Volcano Badge for Waterfall. In battle, any Pokémon that knows the move can use it, badge or not.
Which HMs do you need to finish FireRed and LeafGreen?
Cut, Surf and Strength. You can finish the story without Flash, Fly, Rock Smash or Waterfall.
How do you delete an HM move?
Leveling up and TMs can’t replace an HM move, but the Move Deleter can make a Pokémon forget any move, including HMs. You’ll find the Move Deleter in Fuchsia City, in the house next to the Pokémon Center.
Which Pokémon can learn the most HMs?
Mew learns all seven, but you can only get it from an event. Dragonite learns six.
What’s a good HM helper in FireRed and LeafGreen?
Two Pokémon can carry all seven HMs between them, for example Dragonite and Raichu. The helper finder above shows more options for your version and starter.
Can you get HM08 Dive in FireRed and LeafGreen?
No. Dive is in the game’s data, but nothing in the game gives it to you.
Why are Surf and Waterfall special moves in FireRed and LeafGreen?
Before Diamond and Pearl, a move’s type decided whether it was physical or special, and every Water-type move was special. So Surf and Waterfall use Special Attack in FireRed and LeafGreen, even though Waterfall is physical in later games.
