About HMs in Crystal
HMs (Hidden Machines) teach moves that also work outside battle, like Cut for clearing small trees and Surf for crossing water.
Crystal has seven HMs. This page shows where to get each one, which badge lets you use it outside battle, and every Pokémon that can learn it. Pick the HMs you need and it finds the fewest Pokémon that can carry them, so the rest of your team keeps four battle moves.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many HMs are in Crystal?
Seven: HM01 Cut, HM02 Fly, HM03 Surf, HM04 Strength, HM05 Flash, HM06 Whirlpool and HM07 Waterfall.
Where do you get each HM in Crystal?
In the order you get them:
- HM05 Flash: Given by the sage at the top of Sprout Tower in Violet City
- HM01 Cut: Given in Ilex Forest, after you chase down the wandering Farfetch’d and talk to its owner
- HM03 Surf: From the man in the house of Eevee trainers in Ecruteak City, after you defeat the five trainers inside

Which badge do you need to use each HM in Crystal?
To use an HM outside battle: Zephyr Badge for Flash, Hive Badge for Cut, Fog Badge for Surf, Plain Badge for Strength, Storm Badge for Fly, Glacier Badge for Whirlpool and Rising Badge for Waterfall. In battle, any Pokémon that knows the move can use it, badge or not.
How do you delete an HM move?
Leveling up and TMs can’t replace an HM move, but the Move Deleter can make a Pokémon forget any move, including HMs. You’ll find the Move Deleter in Blackthorn City, in the house west of the Poké Mart.
Which Pokémon can learn the most HMs?
Mew learns all seven. Psyduck, Golduck, Dragonite and Lugia learn five.
What’s a good HM helper in Crystal?
Two Pokémon can carry all seven HMs between them, for example Starmie and Charizard. The helper finder above shows more options for your version and starter.
Why are Surf, Whirlpool and Waterfall special moves in Crystal?
Before Diamond and Pearl, a move’s type decided whether it was physical or special, and every Water-type move was special. So Surf, Whirlpool and Waterfall use Special Attack in Crystal, even though Waterfall is physical in later games.
