About HMs in Yellow
HMs (Hidden Machines) teach moves that also work outside battle, like Cut for clearing small trees and Surf for crossing water.
Yellow has five HMs, and you can’t finish the game without Cut, Surf and Strength. This page shows where to get each one, which badge lets you use it outside battle, and every Pokémon that can learn it. Pick the HMs you need and it finds the fewest Pokémon that can carry them, so the rest of your team keeps four battle moves.

Where do you get each HM in Yellow?
In the order you get them:
- HM01 Cut: Given by the captain of the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City after you soothe his seasickness
- HM05 Flash: From Professor Oak’s Aide in the Route 2 gate, once you have caught at least 10 Pokémon

Which badge do you need to use each HM in Yellow?
To use an HM outside battle: Cascade Badge for Cut, Boulder Badge for Flash, Thunder Badge for Fly, Soul Badge for Surf and Rainbow Badge for Strength. In battle, any Pokémon that knows the move can use it, badge or not.
Which HMs do you need to finish Yellow?
Cut, Surf and Strength. You can finish the story without Flash or Fly.
How do you delete an HM move?

Mew learns all five. Charizard, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Krabby and 2 more learn three.
What’s a good HM helper in Yellow?
Two Pokémon can carry all five HMs between them, for example Charizard and Slowbro. The helper finder above shows more options for your version and starter.
Why is Surf a special move in Yellow?
Before Diamond and Pearl, a move’s type decided whether it was physical or special, and every Water-type move was special. So Surf uses the Special stat in Yellow.
