About HMs in HeartGold and SoulSilver

HMs (Hidden Machines) teach moves that also work outside battle, like Cut for clearing small trees and Surf for crossing water.

HeartGold and SoulSilver have eight HMs, and you can’t finish the game without Rock Smash, Cut, Surf, Strength, Waterfall and Rock Climb. This page shows where to get each one, which badge lets you use it outside battle, and every Pokémon that can learn it. Pick the HMs you need and it finds the fewest Pokémon that can carry them, so the rest of your team keeps four battle moves.
