Rocket Shiny Odds
Exact Shiny rates for Grunts, Leaders, Giovanni, and Shadow Raids in Pokémon GO, plus how they stack against standard wild encounters.
First question
Can this encounter even be Shiny?
Eligibility comes first. Older restrictions limited Shiny Shadows to Leaders only, then to Grunts from March 2023 onward. Today the rule is simple.
These Rocket sources can be Shiny
Grunt-caught Shadow (any species with a Shiny released)
Leader rewards (Arlo, Cliff, Sierra)
Giovanni reward (Shadow Legendary)
Shadow Raid catches (Tier 1, 3, 5)
Shiny status persists through purification
These cannot be Shiny
Species without a released Shiny
The Pokémon you battle (not the catchable reward)
Decoys impersonating Giovanni
Pre-Frustration historical Shadows that were never re-released
Headline rates
Three rates to remember
Standard wild rate, Grunt / Leader rate, and the boosted Giovanni / Shadow Raid rate. Everything else routes through one of these.
~1 / 500
Wild baseline
Permaboost rate most species sit at outside events
~1 / 4,096
Grunt or Leader Shiny
Standard non-boosted rate. Identical for both sources
~1 / 1,000
Giovanni or Shadow Raid Shiny
~4× the standard rate, per-encounter only
Source rates
Shiny odds by Rocket encounter
Rate is per-encounter. Cost-per-attempt is what changes between sources, not the underlying probability.
Wild (baseline)
Most species, no event boost
~1 / 500
Permaboost rate
The standard floor most species sit at. Community Day, Spotlight Hour, and event features push higher.
Rocket Grunt
Standard non-boosted Shadow
~1 / 4,096
Shiny rate
Applies to the catchable Shadow at the end of any Grunt fight. The cheapest Shiny Shadow source by encounter count.
Leader
Arlo, Cliff, Sierra
~1 / 4,096
Shiny rate
Same per-encounter rate as Grunts. Cost is higher because each fight burns a Rocket Radar.
Giovanni
Shadow Legendary
~1 / 1,000
Shiny rate (×4 boost)
Boosted Shiny rate on the Shadow Legendary at the end of the fight. Gated behind a Super Rocket Radar.
Shadow Raid
Tier 1 / 3 / 5
~1 / 1,000
Shiny rate (×4 boost)
Per-encounter, only after defeating the raid. Same boosted rate as Giovanni. Weekend group events.
The Lucky-hundo bridge
Shiny hunting doubles as a hundo lottery
Purification adds +2 to every IV (capped at 15). A Shiny 13/13/13 catch becomes a guaranteed Shiny hundo after purification. Stack a Lucky trade and you get a Lucky Shiny hundo.
Shiny 13/13/13
13 / 13 / 13
Shiny 15/15/15 Purified
15 / 15 / 15
Then trade for a Lucky reroll at the 12/12/12 floor. The Shiny status survives purification and trading. Most Rocket hunters chase this combination as the holy grail.
Grind tips
How to grind Shadow Shinies efficiently
Volume beats luck. Most of the cost is in setup time, not in the encounter itself. Compress setup.
Hunt during Takeover events
Balloon spawns rise, components drop more often, and Grunts can roll wider IV variance.
Quick-flee non-Shiny encounters
Open the bonus challenge, peek the catchable Shadow, back out if it is not Shiny. You keep the components.
Shiny-check the third Pokémon
That is the slot Giovanni and Leaders give you. The only one that matters for the encounter.
Stack Shadow Raids on weekends
Weather-boosted Tier 3 and Tier 5 catches arrive at level 15 with a 6/6/6 floor.
FAQ
Common Shiny questions
Are all Shadow Pokémon Shiny-eligible?
Any Shadow can be Shiny if its species has had a Shiny debut. Older restrictions limited this to Leaders, then to Grunts from March 2023 onward.
Does purification remove Shiny status?
No. A Purified Shiny stays Shiny. You lose the corruption smoke and Frustration, but the sparkle and Shiny palette remain.
Can I trade a Shadow for a Lucky Shiny hundo?
No, Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded. Purify first, then trade. The 13/13/13 → 15/15/15 jump happens at purification, before the Lucky trade.
Do weather boosts affect Shiny rate?
No. Weather raises the IV floor and catch level, not the Shiny roll. The Shiny rate is the same in fog or in clear skies.
