Shadow Pokémon
Corrupted Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket. They hit 20% harder, take 17% more damage, and dominate the raid meta as long as you handle Frustration.
The damage tradeoff
×1.2 Attack, ×0.83 Defense
Shadow Pokémon carry a permanent stat modifier into every battle. The 20% Attack boost is enormous in PvE. The 17% Defense penalty is harder to absorb in PvP.
×1.2
Attack multiplier
Stacks with weather, friendship, and type effectiveness
×0.83
Defense multiplier
Faints faster. Worth it in raids, costly in PvP
Level 30 ≈ Level 40
Effective DPS parity
A Shadow at level 30 typically out-damages a non-Shadow counterpart at level 40
What Shadow Pokémon can do
Where the Shadow Bonus locks doors
The ×1.2 Attack multiplier comes with restrictions. Several core game systems are gated until you purify.
Shadow Pokémon CAN
Be powered up, evolved, and Charged-TM’d (except Frustration)
Earn Stardust and XP normally
Be set as a Buddy and progress to Best Buddy
Appear as Shiny
Be used in raids, gyms, GO Battle League, and Master League
Shadow Pokémon CANNOT
Be traded between trainers
Be sent to Pokémon HOME
Mega Evolve
Be Hyper Trained
Have Frustration replaced outside Takeover events
How to acquire
Four ways to catch a Shadow
Each source has a different IV floor and a different friction. Pick the one that matches what you actually want from the catch.
Grunts
Common, wide species pool
1/1/1
IV floor (level 8, 13 weather-boosted)
Free encounters from Rocket Stops and balloons. Worst IV floor in the game, but the cheapest path to a Shadow attacker.
Leaders
Arlo, Cliff, Sierra. Rotating roster
6/6/6
IV floor (level 8, 13 weather-boosted)
Costs a Rocket Radar (6 Mysterious Components). Encounter still rolls a 1/1,000 hundo direct, 27/1,000 after purification.
Giovanni
Shadow Legendary reward
6/6/6
IV floor (level 15)
Gated by Special Research and a Super Rocket Radar. The only consistent way to land a Shadow Legendary outside Shadow Raids.
Shadow Raids
Tier 1 / 3 / 5 weekend events
6/6/6
IV floor (level 13, 15 weather-boosted)
Boss enters an enraged state at HP thresholds. Spend Purified Gems to subdue. Tier 5 needs a group.
The catch
Every Shadow Pokémon comes locked with Frustration
Normal-type Charged Move, 10 power, 5.0 DPS. The worst Charged Move in the game. It exists specifically to prevent Shadow Pokémon from being a free upgrade. Two ways to remove it.
Purify
Permanent fix
Replaces Frustration with Return forever. Costs Stardust and Candy. Removes the ×1.2 Attack Bonus in the process.
Wait for Takeover
Charged TM during the event
Team GO Rocket Takeover events run every couple of months. During the event, a regular or Elite Charged TM removes Frustration.
Stockpile
Keep TMs ready
You usually do not get advance notice. Save Charged TMs ahead of any Shadow you plan to use long-term as a raid attacker.

Free Attack inside the CP cap
The Shadow Bonus does not raise CP. You get free Attack power inside a CP-capped league. The Defense penalty is the cost. A handful of Shadow Pokémon still rise to top of the meta in spite of it.
