Overview
Pokémon Unite is the franchise's first dedicated team battle game. Two teams of five trainers face off on a symmetrical arena, defeating wild Pokémon for experience and Aeos energy, then carrying that energy across the field to score in enemy goal zones. The team with the most points when the clock hits zero wins. Matches run roughly 10 minutes, and the closing stretch doubles point values, so an early lead can vanish in seconds.
Each playable Pokémon evolves and learns new moves during a match, then unlocks a flashy Unite Move at higher levels. Between matches, trainers tune their Pokémon with Held Items, Battle Items, and Boost Emblems, and climb a ranked ladder that culminates in the Master tier. The game runs on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android with cross-platform play, and it is free to start.
The Pokémon Company has folded Unite into the official esports calendar. Since 2022 it has appeared at the Pokémon World Championships, alongside the main-series video games and the trading card game.
Story
Pokémon Unite is set on Aeos Island, a remote research outpost in the Aeos Region. The island is home to the Aeos Conference, a tournament where trainers from across the world compete in five-on-five team battles powered by Aeos energy, a mysterious resource native to the island.
The competition is overseen by Professor Phorus and his assistant Erbie, who track each match and award the title of Unite Club Master to the trainers who climb to the top of the league. There is no overarching villain or world to save. The story is the tournament, and the tournament resets every season.
Key features
Five-on-five matches with goal scoring
Two teams of five trainers fight across a symmetrical map of goal zones. Defeating wild and opposing Pokémon earns Aeos energy, which you carry to an opponent's goal and dunk for points. Goals can be broken to push the line forward, and points double in the final two minutes, so the score can swing late.
A roster of playable Pokémon, sorted into five roles
Every Pokémon belongs to one role. Attackers deal heavy ranged damage from a safe distance. All-Rounders are durable bruisers built for the front line. Speedsters slip past the team fight to burst down isolated targets. Defenders soak damage and protect teammates. Supporters heal, shield, and buff their allies. A balanced team usually mixes all five.
Unite Moves
Every Pokémon has a signature Unite Move that charges through battle and unleashes once per fight, often turning a skirmish on its head. Snorlax body-slams a wide area. Cinderace unloads a precision Blazing Bicycle Kick. Mewtwo X warps the whole arena. Holding a Unite Move for the right moment is one of the core skill tests of the game.
Held Items, Battle Items, and Boost Emblems
Before a match, each Pokémon equips up to three Held Items for permanent stat bonuses and passive effects, plus one Battle Item for in-match utility like Eject Button or Slow Smoke. Boost Emblems add a long-term meta-progression layer, with stat tweaks tied to a collection of emblem Pokémon you build over time.
Ranked Battle and the competitive scene
Ranked Battle unlocks at Trainer Level 6 and runs in seasonal splits across Beginner, Great, Expert, Veteran, Ultra, and Master tiers. The competitive ladder feeds into the UNITE Championship Series, and the game has been part of the Pokémon World Championships since 2022.
New Pokémon
Pokémon Unite doesn't introduce its own species. It adapts existing Pokémon as playable units, and the roster grows steadily, with new fighters added every few weeks. Recent additions have included Mega Evolution variants, so familiar Pokémon get a second life as separate playable kits.
Anatomy of an Aeos Cup match
A standard match runs 10 minutes on Theia Sky Ruins, the current default map. Both teams spawn at opposite ends of a symmetrical lane layout, then head out to farm wild Pokémon, push lanes, and contest objectives. The early game is about leveling up and learning your kit. The mid game is about controlling the jungle and breaking goals. The late game is about Rayquaza, who spawns two minutes from the buzzer and grants the killing team a shield that lets them score uncontested. Points double in those final two minutes, which means a single Rayquaza fight can decide the match.
Roles and team composition
A team typically runs one of each role, though stacked compositions show up at higher tiers. Speedsters and All-Rounders tend to roam the jungle and rotate to objectives. Attackers and Supporters lock down the bottom lane, where the late-game power spikes matter most. Defenders hold the top lane, soaking pressure while their team scales. The role badge on each Pokémon's portrait tells you what it is built to do, but kit details matter more than the label, and a skilled player can flex a Supporter into a secondary frontline.
Held Items, Boost Emblems, and meta progression
Held Items level up through repeated use, so a maxed Muscle Band or Score Shield gives a meaningful edge over a fresh one. Boost Emblems layer stat bonuses on top, drawn from a collection that grows as you complete missions and seasons. Together they form the closest thing Unite has to a build-craft system, and they reward trainers who play consistently across a season rather than dipping in for a single match.
Reception and the free-to-play model
Critical reception was mixed at launch. The Nintendo Switch version sits at 70 on Metacritic, with reviewers praising the streamlined MOBA design and criticizing the depth of monetization. The Pokémon Company has reported over 200 million downloads as of July 2024, and the game continues to add roster members, maps, and seasonal events. The monetization model leans on cosmetic Holowear, Unite licenses to unlock additional Pokémon, and a battle pass. Most gameplay-relevant unlocks are reachable through play, though Held Item upgrades and license unlocks are the most common friction points for free trainers.
FAQ
Is Pokémon Unite free to play?
Yes. The game is free to start on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, with optional in-app purchases for cosmetic Holowear, Unite licenses to unlock additional Pokémon, and a seasonal battle pass.
How long is a match?
A standard ranked or quick match runs 10 minutes. The final two minutes are a "last stand" phase where point values double, so the score often swings late.
Do my Switch progress and mobile progress sync?
Yes. Linking a Pokémon Trainer Club account or Nintendo Account ties your roster, items, and rank across Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Cross-platform play is on by default.
What are the five roles?
Attacker (ranged damage), All-Rounder (balanced offense and defense), Speedster (mobility and burst), Defender (durability and zone control), and Supporter (healing, shielding, and crowd control). A balanced team usually includes one of each.
How do I unlock new Pokémon?
Each playable Pokémon requires a Unite license. Licenses can be purchased with Aeos coins earned through play, with Aeos gems bought in-store, or claimed from events and the battle pass. New roster additions usually arrive every few weeks.
