The Ultimate Masuda Method Guide in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet!

What is the Masuda Method?
The Masuda Method, introduced in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, raises the likelihood of hatching a shiny Pokémon by breeding parents that originate from different language versions of the game.
Why is it called the Masuda Method?
The Masuda Method is named after Junichi Masuda, a developer at Game Freak and a co-founder of the Pokémon series. Junichi Masuda first hinted at the shiny hunting technique on his blog and explained how the method would work in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. The community then named this shiny hunting method the Masuda Method.
Why Use the Masuda Method for Shiny Hunting?
The Masuda Method has very good shiny odds: 1/512 with the shiny charm and 1/683 without the Shiny Charm. Breeding two Pokémon from the same region has shiny odds of 1/2048 with the Shiny Charm or 1/4096 without.
Additionally, some Pokémon, such as
Phione, can only be hunted by using the Masuda method.
What Pokémon Do You Need for the Masuda Method?
For the Masuda Method, you need two Pokémon that originate from different languages. The best Pokémon to use for the Masuda Method is a
Ditto originating from a different country than your game's save file, as a
Ditto can breed with a lot of Pokémon, and you could use it for most Masuda Method hunts.
Furthermore, while a Pokémon with the Flame Body or Magma Armor ability is not necessary, having one at the front of your party will require fewer steps to hatch the eggs.
Benefits of the Masuda Method
The Masuda Method has two main benefits, one of which is that it offers very good shiny odds, specifically 1/512 with the shiny charm and 1/683 without it.
The second benefit of using the Masuda Method to shiny hunt is that you can simultaneously breed a Pokémon with great Individual Values, or IVs for short. If one parent holds a Destiny Knot, their offspring will inherit five of the parent's twelve total IVs. This is useful when breeding competitive Pokémon for online battles. If you’re lucky, you may even breed a shiny with perfect IVs!
Breeding Tips and Tricks
- Using a sandwich with the Egg Power effect will speed up egg collection at a picnic, and eggs will hatch in fewer steps.
- When a parent holds an Everstone, the offspring has a 50% chance of inheriting the parent's Nature.
- By giving a regional variant Pokémon an Everstone, their offspring will also inherit their form. Without the Everstone, the offspring would have their normal form.
